News from Dr.
McGill
It is with tremendous sadness that this is
the last newsletter to be published from our school. Times
change and we must move with the times. Bacon School is a
wonderfully warm family unit and a great school to work in and
be a part of. Thank you to everyone who has served on our PTA
from conception to present, to parents, relatives, and friends
who have helped out (in the classrooms, on special occasions,
on field days, and as chaperones on trips). Also, to the many
tutors who have volunteered their time to work with our
students. To teachers and staff (past and present), our
current and past principals and others who have touched the
Bacon family in some way. You will forever be in our hearts.
Parents please remember that in order for
your children to go on a field trip they need their permission
slip signed and returned to school otherwise they cannot go
with their class. Even though it is coming close to the end of
the year we still have several classes that have trips
planned.
Please note that there are early dismissal
days/times listed on your calendar. Please pay close attention
to them so that your children can be picked up in a timely
manner on those days.
If your student is missing an article of
clothing please make sure that they check in the Health Office
for it. Anything that is not picked up will be discarded.
The reception for our PAY Tutors was held
on Tuesday, May 23rd. It was a nice event which was hosted by
our PTA and enjoyed by all who attended. Our PAY Tutors are a
group of very dedicated senior volunteers (organized through
the Big Brother/Big Sister Organization) who have worked with
the children in the lower grades this year on a weekly basis.
Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Kerchner, who coordinated the
program this year and to our many wonderful volunteers.
We will be holding our Moving-up Ceremony
for Bacon School 5th graders on Thursday, June 22nd at 9am.
This will be a wonderful celebration and the children are
working very hard to prepare for this occasion.
Cafeteria News: On Friday, June 9th
mid-morning milk money will be collected for the last time.
This will be for the week of June 12th through June 16th.
There will be no milk offered from Monday, June 19th – Friday,
June 23rd. Also, starting June 5th through June 23rd, soup
will no longer be offered for lunch. From June 19th through
June 23rd, salads will not be offered for lunch either.
Terra Nova scores for Grade 2 have come in
and will be going home with your child on the last day of
school with their report cards. We have been informed by the
State Education Department that the results for grades 3, 4
and 5 ELA will not be available until at least September, and
the Math scores are to follow in October.
It’s been a wonderful 5 years serving as
your principal. I couldn’t have a more dedicated faculty and
staff or more welcoming community of parents and children. I
thank you all for letting me be a part of you and your
children’s lives. I am a much richer person from this
experience.
As you know, letters were sent out
reassigning your child to a new school for next year. If you
did not receive a letter, please call me at Bacon right away.
I encourage you to support your children in their transition
by attending your new school’s Open House and staying active
in your children’s school. Thank you and have a safe and warm
summer.
Sincerely,
Phyllis McGill
We Need Notes for
Any Changes in Dismissal
We need notes to the office before 9:00am
so that children and teachers know ahead of time, and can be
prepared for dismissal. If a student is leaving school during
the day for an appointment or other valid reason, they must
have a written note signed by a parent/guardian. Notes need to
be specific: student’s name, teacher name, date, reason for
note (we are not getting enough information on notes being
sent in). Medical appointments should be scheduled for after
school hours whenever possible. If a student is using another
mode of transportation other than their regular one (going
with a neighbor, walking home or to a friend’s house, etc.)
please send in a note to the office.
Remember, children must be picked up at the
office for early release.
Important Health Notes
With the warmer weather here, a health
issue we all will be dealing with is allergies, (airborne,
bee, & wasp stings). If your child is allergic to bee/wasp
stings please notify the office at once and please send in
necessary medication along with a signed doctor’s permission
to the Health Office as soon as possible. Also if your child
needs an inhaler during school hours, we cannot dispense
medication without signed permission from your child’s doctor.
Since the children will be going outdoors more when the
weather warms up, this is a very important issue.
Traffic Safety
Concerns
A reminder about the circle where the buses
park: Please do NOT park there between 8:15-9am or 2:45-3:30pm
as our busses use this area for drop off and pick up. We have
more than 100 students using our school buses. Also it is not
safe for the children getting off/on the busses or other
students being dropped off/picked up if you are parked in the
circle. Please use the lower lot to park in.
Please make sure children come to school
dressed appropriately for the cold weather. They should dress
in layers (sweatshirts, sweaters) that can be taken off or put
on as needed. They should also be prepared with boots, hats,
scarves and mittens. When the weather permits, they do go
outside to play.
School Closing News
Parents please visit our school website (www.gasd.org)
or tune in to your local TV stations (channels 6, 9, 10 and
13, also radio stations WCSS/WIZR, WBUG, WROW, WTRY, WENT, WGY/WGFM)
for any delays or closings due to weather conditions.
Also, if emergency information has changed recently, please
inform the office so that we may correct changes on emergency
sheets. We do need this information in the event of a school
emergency, a sick child, or in the event school closes early.
Please call us during school hours at 843-3020, write a note,
or stop by the office if there are changes. If you have to
make changes as to who can pick up your child from school, you
will need to fill out a new emergency card. This is so
important!
School Hours
School hours are from 8:40 a.m. to 3:10.
Children in the primary grades of Kindergarten, first and
second are walked down to the front door starting at 3:00.
Please, children should not be dropped off
at school before 8:30; the only exception is for children
having breakfast at school; these children may arrive at 8:15.
Please understand that we are not staffed to supervise any
children before these times.
Bacon P.T.A. (Parent
Teacher Association)
Our P.T.A. is a very active, involved and
committed group of parents. The PTA plays an important role at
Bacon School. Please consider becoming a member and plan on
participating in the many wonderful activities they plan each
year.

Attendance
It is very important that you encourage
good, regular attendance to help your child achieve in school.
A written excuse is always required when your child returns to
school after being absent. Please call the Health Aide, Mrs.
Barkevich, when your child is going to be absent or late. As
per our Health Policy and for the health of all, children that
were ill are not to return to school unless they are no longer
contagious (e.g., 24 hours of medication for Strep Throat),
have had a normal temperature for 24 hours, and have not
vomited or had diarrhea for 24 hours. According to State law,
we do keep track of absences and lateness, and we must report
problems to the Superintendent.
Early Release from
School: Special circumstances sometimes happen when it
might be necessary for you to pick up your child early from
school. The school will not release your child to another
adult unless you have designated that person on the student
designation card. Please keep this card updated as changes
occur (It is kept on file in the office).
Medications in
School: Medication may only be given to students in
school with both the doctor’s and parent’s permission. Please
do not send any medication with your child to school without
first discussing the matter first with the health office or
the principal. Emergencies: An emergency form will be
coming home with your child. It is very important that this
form be filled out as accurately as possible and returned to
school.
Custody and Court
Documents
In order for the school to help protect
your child from having contact with people who have legally
been prohibited from doing so, please provide us with a copy
of the court order for our files. These documents may also be
faxed to us at 843-4080.
