National Honor Society

The purpose of the Amsterdam High School Chapter of National Honor Society is to recognize and encourage academic achievement, service, leadership and good character. Membership is an honor bestowed upon a student with selection by a faculty council in the spring of each year. To be eligible for selection a student must have a CUMULATIVE AVERAGE (since ninth grade) of 90 or above and demonstrate leadership, service and good character.

Following the school policy for class rank, the following classes are exempt from the cumulative average: physical education, special education, and off campus courses. Courses taken in seventh or eighth grade for high school credit are part of the cumulative average. Students in Regents, College Prep and Honors classes are all eligible under the same standards.

Academic Awards

Each year many awards for outstanding scholarship, service, achievement, and financial need are presented at the Amsterdam High School Awards Assembly. These awards are made available by many different organizations and individuals from both the school and the community. The awards list may vary from year to year as new ones are added and others discontinued. The amounts of the awards may change from time to time depending upon the wishes of the sponsors.

Students are advised by the Guidance Office of the availability of these awards early in their final semester and appropriate directions for applications are given. From time to time announcements concerning the availability of scholarships are made over the public address system and are posted on the guidance bulletin board. Students are urged to make a habit of checking with the guidance office with respect to scholarship information. It is important to note that in order to be considered for a scholarship, a student must secure, complete, and hand in to the Guidance Office a scholarship application by the identified due date and must be a school citizen of good standing.
