AHS earns area tops in Math League contests

In just its fourth year of competition, the AHS Math League team earned first place in Fulton and Montgomery counties. Throughout the year, anywhere from 17 to 27 students participated in each of the six contests administered between October and April by Math League advisor Mrs. Pynadath.

Math League encourages students to use skills they have learned in class to solve a series of six challenging problems in 30 minutes. The problems frequently require the students to think outside the ‘box’ to find a solution. The contest problems are designed to cover a range of mathematical topics and is within the grade levels of the students, without the need for any additional knowledge. The challenge of competition helps students develop interest and confidence in mathematics.

Schools compete in regional or state leagues. The sum of the top five scores in each school is submitted as the team score for the school. Individuals who compete in all six contests are eligible for individual recognition.

“Congratulations” goes to AHS top scorers:

  • First Place —Megan Gaugler (Junior)

  • Second Place—Joseph Kaczmarek (Junior)

  • Third Place—Adam Mihalek (Freshman)

  • Fourth Place—Christopher Greco (Junior)

  • Fifth Place —Luis Petrosino (Junior) & Dillan Rathke (Junior)

The Math League contests provide an academic extra-curricular activity to the AHS students. It is a nationally known contest that stands out favorably on a student's transcript.
