Course Description:

We begin the school year talking about some basic information about computers and a little history about computers.  The students will have an opportunity to look at some old computer parts that have been taken apart so they can see the insides.

Following this little intro unit the students will be working on Microsoft Excel.  This is a powerful mathematical tool.  The students are learning how to write formulas to perform calculations automatically, format data and create different types of charts.

After finishing Excel, the students will be working on Microsoft Word.  They will learn some basic word processing skills, like setting margins, indenting text, spacing, selecting different types of fonts, styles of fonts, etc.  The students will practice doing college letters, outlines, resumes, and creating mail merge documents.

Following Word, the students will be creating presentations on a topic of their choice in Microsoft PowerPoint.  They will learn how to animate the slides as well as text and/or graphics on each slide.

Next, students will develop a web page of their own using Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML).  They will learn how to code their pages and how they link their pages together as well as linking to other websites.  I will show them how they can upload their pages to the Internet but we will NOT upload them as part of this unit.

The final part of the course is to learn programming in the Java language.  Students will learn the syntax of the language as well as some algorithms used in Computer Science.  Students who enjoy programming are encouraged to sign up to take Advanced Placement Computer Science next year where they will have an opportunity to take the AP exam in May and possibly earn college credit for the course.
