HOMEWORK

Homework is a very important aspect of school. It provides children with the practice they need to reinforce the skills taught at school. It also helps them learn to manage their time wisely and to organize their belongings and their space.

When parents help children with homework, they are kept aware of what the child is learning in school. When a child is having trouble with a homework assignment, it signals that the child may need extra help with that topic. Homework also provides parents with activities they can do together.

Each child has a special folder just for homework. The homework folder goes home on Mondays, with all assignments and word lists inside for the week. It is expected that children will practice list words and read every day in addition to other assignments. Book titles should be written on the book list attached to the folder. Homework is due back to school on Fridays. It is expected that all homework will be completed and returned on time. Children who do not return homework are not allowed to play.

To help your child:

  • Provide a quiet space for homework.

  • Set aside a regular time, usually 15-30 minutes per day will be plenty of time.

  • Keep supplies handy at home – pencils, crayons, paper, scissors, glue.

  • First Graders need to do homework with a parent. They need help and support, and parents need to check their work.

  • Help your child find a safe place to keep the homework folder during the week.

  • The cover sheet will tell you which day to do the math pages. Please try to stick to that schedule, because the material will often not be taught until that day.

  • Remember to return the homework folder on Friday, or the next school day if there is no school or your child is absent.

Thank you for your support.
