Students build gingerbread houses in
exploration lab
Second-graders designed and built their own
gingerbread houses for the holiday season.
Mrs. Diana Giardino's students built the
edible homes in Marie Curie's new exploration lab, where
teachers can take their classes to conduct lessons and
activities related to the school's magnet theme of engineering
and communications. Mrs. Flichtbeil, the school's media
specialist, helped out.
To construct the gingerbread houses, students
used various edible materials; icing was used as an adhesive to
hold the
gingerbread pieces together, pretzels were used as windows,
gumdrops and m&ms were used as doorknobs and
decorations, marshmallows were used to make snowmen, and many
different candies, including peppermint, were used for
landscaping.
This project also connected with "The City by
Design" program that the students recently attended at
The Saratoga Children's Museum. Students were then allowed
to take their gingerbread houses home!
This was an exciting
and educational activity that not only enhanced our magnet
theme, but the holiday spirit as well!
