Drama Club stages "The
Imaginary Invalid"
Amsterdam High School's Drama Club staged a performance of
"The Imaginary Invalid" last month.
The play was written by the French playwright Moliere and is a
satire of the medical profession during the 1600s. The play
also provides a character study of a hypochondriac and offers social
and political commentary on French society of the time.
Argan, a fearful but miserly hypochondriac, spends most of
his time summoning doctors, but then refuses to pay their
bills. He resolves to marry his daughter, Angélique, to a
medical student, hoping this will provide him with free
medical care for the rest of his life. Unfortunately, the
chosen fiancé is an unattractive dolt, who would never
interest Angélique, even if she were not already in love
with clever, handsome Cléante. Argan’s maid servant,
Toinette, hopes to convince him to become a doctor himself,
in an attempt to free him from the bonds of his imaginary
diseases.
